Night Soil Artefacts
Night Soil Artefact Study Groups
Many of the fields we have surveyed since 1999 have surrendered artefacts that arrived onto the field via the Grantham Canal barges in amongst the night soil deliveries. We hope a closer examination of these artefacts will shed some light on the people who lived, visited and worked in Nottingham during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The story of Nottingham's Night Soil is integral to the history of Nottingham's industrial past because it is a story about the people who were there, told through their visits to the privy.

Buttons and Badges
The buttons featured below are almost certainly associated with Nottingham. Through further research, we hope to learn more about them and the people who might have used them. As the investigation grows, we will add a Buttons & Badges booklet to the page.

Medieval Roof Furniture
This is an avenue of investigation that will enable us to adopt an informed understanding of medieval roof furniture. We will be using two sets of curated roof furniture assemblages from the Owthorpe and Hoveringham historic landscape investigations so that we can compare them with other curated collections relating to c.12th-15th century medieval manor houses/halls. We want to see if there are any similarities across the sites. It will also be an opportunity to compare pottery sherds and artefacts.
